The project draws on personal experiences of childhood and family life, from the artist and collaborators.

Within the family, as in life experiences in general, language becomes a weapon by which children and adults are judged. The values and opinions of those in 'power' are forced upon us, we choose (if we can) whether to conform or rebel.

In an ideal world we would not need to make this choice, we would be recognised as an individual, not judged by other's pre-conceived ideas or stereotypes.

The project has involved me working closely with others who have contributed their 'slogans'. These are often things said to them during childhood, words that seem harsh if not alot worse. It is easy to recognise the negativity of these words, but we claim them, turn them round and throw them back out.

It's not difficult to see why of all the slogans in the book it was 'why do you always have to be different' that was taken during the private view!

Yes we are different, and we plan to stay that way.
